Description
ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE is an organic compound, chemically designated as 3-Methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-3-buten-2-one. The technical functions it has declared, skin conditioning and perfuming, describe the role it plays within the formulation: in general terms, the perfuming function corresponds to ingredients that contribute a note of their own or are integrated into a broader fragrance composition, and the skin conditioning function to ingredients incorporated to keep the skin in good condition.
The substance is listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which covers substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 90. The literal wording of the conditions is as follows: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". Thus, mention in the list of ingredients becomes mandatory when the concentration exceeds 0.001% in a leave-on product or 0.01% in a rinse-off product. The associated cosmetic restriction is identified as III/90.
In formulation practice, the perfuming function translates into building the aroma of the finished product, whether within a fragrance composition or as a means of masking the odor of other raw materials. Skin conditioning ingredients are used in skin care products. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
