Description

Anethole is an organic compound belonging to the phenylpropene class, specifically a methoxylated aromatic ether with a propenyl chain in trans configuration. It corresponds chemically to 1-methoxy-4-(1E)-1-propen-1-yl-benzene. In cosmetics, substances with a DENATURANT function are incorporated into formulations containing ethyl alcohol to modify its organoleptic character and discourage its ingestion, while ingredients with a FRAGRANCE function provide the olfactory profile of the finished product or form part of complex perfuming compositions. The ingredient also appears in the regulatory bases under the name ANETHOLE.

Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance is listed in Annex III, reference 329, which corresponds to the substances that cosmetic products must not contain except subject to the restrictions laid down. The entry does not set a generally applicable quantitative maximum concentration limit nor restrict the type of cosmetic product in which it may be incorporated. The specific condition laid down in the corresponding column literally states: "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products." No additional mandatory warnings are laid down in the text and conditions of use or in the indications that must appear on the labelling. The substance is not classified as CMR under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
