Description
Benzaldehyde is an aromatic organic compound belonging to the class of aromatic aldehydes, characterized by a carbonyl group bound directly to a benzene ring. In cosmetics it is used with the technical functions of denaturant, fragrance, perfuming and flavouring. Ingredients with these functions are incorporated into formulations to provide odoriferous components, modify the sensory profile of a product, render an alcohol unfit for consumption, or contribute taste nuances in products for oral application.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance is included in Annex III, reference 330, which corresponds to the list of substances that cosmetic products must not contain except subject to the restrictions laid down. The entry does not set a numerical maximum concentration limit in the finished product, but establishes an obligation of indication in the list of ingredients in the following literal terms: "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products." No additional mandatory labelling warnings appear, no CMR classification is recorded, and the type of cosmetic product in which it may be incorporated is not restricted within the framework of this entry.
The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
