Its declared technical function in the European inventory of cosmetic ingredients is that of preservative (PRESERVATIVE). Preservatives are a functional category whose general purpose in cosmetics is to contribute to the microbiological stability of formulations, limiting the development of microorganisms during the shelf life of the product once manufactured and throughout its subsequent use by the consumer. The incorporation of a preservative is part of the overall design of the preservative system of a finished cosmetic product.
Within the European Union regulatory framework, this substance is listed in Annex V of the Regulation on cosmetic products, under reference 55. Annex V is the list of substances authorized as preservatives in cosmetic products placed on the market in the territory of the Union. The maximum authorized concentration in the finished cosmetic product is set at "0.15%". Its use is restricted to the products described in the entry as "Rinse-off products".
