Description

CI 19140 is a pyrazole-type colorant, according to its chemical description. Its chemical name is Trisodium 5-hydroxy-1-(4-sulphophenyl)-4-((4-sulphophenyl)azo)pyrazole-3-carboxylate and its insoluble barium, strontium and zirconium lakes, salts and pigments, so the entry also covers the insoluble barium, strontium and zirconium lakes, salts and pigments. It has the declared functions colorant and hair dyeing: the first groups ingredients that give color to the product or the application area, and the second, those that color the hair. The identified ingredients include CI 19140, ACID YELLOW 23 and ACID YELLOW 23 ALUMINUM LAKE.

CI 19140 is listed in Annex IV of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which contains the permitted colorants, with reference 44 and declared color yellow. The warnings field reads verbatim: "Purity criteria as set out in Commission Directive 95/45/EC (E 102)". In the inventory, the cosmetic restriction of CI 19140 is recorded as "IV/44 (CI 19140) III/189 (Acid Yellow 23; Acid Yellow 23 Aluminum lake)". Entry III/189 corresponds to use as a hair dye, with the product type "Hair dye substance in non-oxidative hair dye products" and a maximum concentration of "0.5%".

Aluminum lakes, such as the one among the identified ingredients, are insoluble pigments that the chemical description of ACID YELLOW 23 ALUMINUM LAKE defines as the aluminum salt of the colorant extended on an appropriate substrate. Hair dyeing ingredients, for their part, are part of hair coloring products. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
