Description
Citronellol is an unsaturated alcohol, chemically described as Citronellol/ (±) 3,7-Dimethyl-6-octen-1-ol; (3R)-3,7-dimethyloct-6-en-1-ol; (3S)-3,7-dimethyloct-6-en-1-ol. The chemical name sets out the (±), (3R) and (3S) forms. Like every alcohol, it contains at least one hydroxyl group in its molecule. Its declared technical function is perfuming; in general terms, an ingredient with this function contributes to the aromatic character of the product, either with a characteristic note or within a broader fragrance composition.
Under reference 86, the substance is part of Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which lists substances restricted subject to conditions. According to the text of the entry, "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products." Once 0.001% is exceeded in a leave-on product, or 0.01% in a rinse-off product, the presence of the substance has to be indicated in the list of ingredients. The cosmetic restriction reference that corresponds to it is III/86.
Within a cosmetic formula, a perfuming ingredient can form part of a fragrance composition or serve to cover the odor of other raw materials, and in this way contributes to the aromatic profile of the finished product. The text of the conditions covers leave-on and rinse-off products alike. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
