Description
Geraniol is an unsaturated alcohol, chemically described as 2,6-Octadien-1-ol, 3,7-dimethyl-, (2E)-, a name that includes the descriptor (2E). Alcohols are characterized by having one or more hydroxyl groups in their structure. The technical functions it declares are tonic and perfuming: in general terms, the tonic function is assigned to ingredients that produce a feeling of well-being on the skin and hair, and the perfuming function to those that contribute to or modulate the olfactory profile of a formulation.
The substance is listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which covers substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 78. The literal text of the applicable conditions states: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". The text distinguishes a threshold of 0.001% for leave-on products and of 0.01% for rinse-off products, both linked to the obligation to indicate the presence of the substance in the list of ingredients. The associated cosmetic restriction is identified as III/78.
In cosmetic formulations, ingredients with a perfuming function are incorporated to build or adjust the aromatic profile of the finished product, either as part of a fragrance composition or to mask the odor of other raw materials present in the formula. Tonic ingredients are used in skin and hair products focused on the sensation of use.
