Description
Hexadecanolactone is a macrocyclic lactone, that is, a large-ring cyclic ester derived from a hydroxycarboxylic acid of sixteen carbon atoms, whose structure corresponds to an oxacycloheptadecan-2-one. Its declared technical function in the inventory is FRAGRANCE and PERFUMING, categories that group substances incorporated into cosmetic formulations with the aim of giving odor to the finished product or masking the inherent odor of other raw materials. In cosmetic inventories it also appears under the name HEXADECANOLACTONE.
The substance is listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, under reference 335, which gathers the ingredients subject to restrictions. The entry does not set a maximum use concentration, but establishes a specific labelling obligation in the list of ingredients provided for in Article 19(1), point (g). In its literal wording, the applicable condition indicates that "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". No additional mandatory warnings are laid down in the labelling, nor restrictions by product type, nor conditions linked to specific populations. The substance is not classified as CMR under the criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
