Description
HEXYL CINNAMAL is an aldehyde, chemically described as 2-Benzylideneoctanal. An aldehyde is any organic compound with a carbonyl group bonded to a hydrogen atom, and the cosmetics industry uses numerous aldehydes as components of aromatic compositions. Its declared technical function is perfuming, a category that designates ingredients involved in the odor profile of the product, either with a note of their own or as part of a broader fragrance composition.
In Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the substance appears in Annex III, devoted to substances restricted subject to conditions, with reference number 87. In their original wording, the conditions state: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". Thus, mention in the list of ingredients becomes mandatory when the concentration exceeds 0.001% in a leave-on product or 0.01% in a rinse-off product. Its cosmetic restriction reference is III/87.
The usual role of the perfuming function in a formulation is to take part in the fragrance composition or to attenuate the inherent odor of other raw materials, whereby it plays a part in the final aroma of the product. The thresholds of the entry cover both products that remain on the skin or hair and those that are rinsed off. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
