Description
HYDROXYCITRONELLAL is an organic compound, chemically designated as Hydroxycitronellal. Its declared technical function is perfuming, characteristic of ingredients that contribute to or modulate the olfactory profile of a formulation, either with a note of their own or within a broader fragrance composition. Ingredients in this category can be combined with other aromatic raw materials to build the olfactory profile of products in different categories.
The substance is listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which groups substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 72. The entry distinguishes two product types, "(a) Oral products" and "(b) Other products", and the recorded maximum concentration is "(b) 1,0 %". The applicable conditions literally establish: "(a) (b) The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)(g) when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". Once 0.001% is exceeded in a leave-on product, or 0.01% in a rinse-off product, the presence of the substance has to be indicated in the list of ingredients. The cosmetic restriction reference that corresponds to it is III/72.
In cosmetic formulations, ingredients with a perfuming function are incorporated to build or adjust the aromatic profile of the finished product, either as part of a fragrance composition or to mask the odor of other raw materials present in the formula. The declaration thresholds of the text apply to both leave-on and rinse-off products. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
