Description
Linalool is an unsaturated alcohol, chemically described as 1,6-Octadien-3-ol, 3,7-dimethyl-. Alcohols are organic compounds containing one or more hydroxyl groups, and in cosmetics different alcohols perform functions ranging from solvent to aromatic component. It declares the technical functions deodorant and perfuming: the first brings together ingredients used to reduce or mask body odors, and the second, those that impart or adjust the odor of the formula. The identified ingredients in the entry are LINALOOL, D-ALLO-OCIMENOL and L-ALLO-OCIMENOL.
Linalool is included in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which concerns substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 84. The conditions of the entry read verbatim: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". Above 0.001% in leave-on products, or 0.01% in rinse-off products, the substance must be declared in the list of ingredients. The associated cosmetic restriction is identified as III/84.
Within a cosmetic formula, a perfuming ingredient can form part of a fragrance composition or serve to cover the odor of other raw materials, and in this way contributes to the aromatic profile of the finished product. Deodorant ingredients are typically found in deodorants and other personal hygiene products intended for body odor control.
