Description

Pinene is a bicyclic organic compound, whose chemical name covers alpha-Pinene and beta-Pinene. As a substance for cosmetic use, it appears with the technical functions of antifoaming agent (ANTIFOAMING) and fragrance component (FRAGRANCE). Ingredients with an antifoaming function are incorporated into formulations to reduce foam formation during the manufacturing process or in the finished product, while fragrance components provide the characteristic olfactory profile of the formulation. In cosmetic identification nomenclature it is also referenced as PINENE.

Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, this ingredient is listed in Annex III under reference 371, corresponding to substances subject to specific restrictions of use. The conditions established indicate that "The presence of the substance or the substances shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when the concentration of the substance or the substances exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". In addition, a quality parameter is set for the raw material: "The peroxide value shall be less than 10 mmoles/L (This limit applies to the substance and not to the finished cosmetic product)". No maximum concentration of use or restriction by type of cosmetic product is specified. The substance is not classified as CMR and no additional mandatory labelling warnings are established beyond the declaration conditions mentioned.

Components with a fragrance function are used in cosmetic formulations to confer olfactory characteristics to the finished product, while antifoaming agents fulfill an auxiliary technological role in foam control during production processes or in the application of the product. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
