Description
Salicylaldehyde is an aromatic organic compound belonging to the class of hydroxybenzaldehydes, characterized by having an aldehyde group and a hydroxyl group adjacent to each other on a benzene ring. Its declared technical function in the European cosmetic inventory is FRAGRANCE, a category that groups substances used for their olfactory profile to give, modify or mask the aroma of the finished product.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the substance is listed in Annex III of ingredients subject to restrictions, under reference 340. The entry does not set a numerical maximum use concentration, but establishes a specific labelling condition according to which "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". This means that, once those thresholds are exceeded, the substance must be declared individually in the list of ingredients. The substance has no harmonized CMR classification under the CLP Regulation and has no additional mandatory warnings associated with it other than the aforementioned declaration obligation.
