Description

Sclareol is an organic compound belonging to the class of alcohols, as follows from its chemical name as a naphthalenepropanol-type derivative. Its declared technical function is PERFUMING, a category that groups ingredients used in cosmetics to provide or modify the olfactory profile of a formulation.

Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, Sclareol is listed in Annex III under reference 342. The condition applicable to this entry, in its literal wording, is as follows: "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". The threshold is expressed differentially by type of cosmetic application: one value for products that remain on the skin after application and another for products that are removed by rinsing.

Ingredients with a perfuming function are incorporated into cosmetic formulations to confer a characteristic olfactory profile or to attenuate the inherent odor of other components of the base. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
