Description
Terpineol is a monocyclic alcohol belonging to the family of p-menthenols, present as a mixture of positional isomers derived from the p-menthane skeleton. Its declared technical function is FRAGRANCE and PERFUMING: ingredients of this category provide olfactory character to the formulation, whether to confer an aromatic profile specific to the product or to mask residual notes of other raw materials. In CosIng nomenclature it also appears under the name TERPINEOL.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the substance is included in Annex III under reference 343, which groups ingredients admitted with restrictions. No numerical maximum concentration limit is set in the restrictive body, but there is a transparency obligation in the labelling: "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products". That is, once those thresholds are exceeded, the substance must appear by name in the list of ingredients on the packaging. No restriction by type of cosmetic product or additional mandatory warnings on the label is provided for, and the substance is not classified as CMR under the CLP Regulation.
