Description
Beta- Caryophyllene is a bicyclic hydrocarbon. In cosmetics, it is attributed the technical functions of fragrance, perfuming and skin conditioning. Ingredients with a fragrance and perfuming function provide aroma to the finished product and contribute to the overall olfactory profile of the formulation, while skin conditioning agents form part of the group of substances that act on the sensory properties of the skin after application. The name is also identified as BETA-CARYOPHYLLENE.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance is listed in Annex III, reference 332, which corresponds to the substances subject to restrictions. No maximum concentration value in the finished product is laid down. The applicable conditions literally state: "The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1), point (g), when its concentration exceeds: — 0,001 % in leave-on products — 0,01 % in rinse-off products." The entry does not provide for additional mandatory labelling warnings beyond the declaration indicated, nor for specific restrictions by type of cosmetic product. The substance is not classified as CMR under the criteria applicable in the cosmetic sector.
Skin conditioning agents are used as part of formulated systems oriented to the sensory conditioning of the skin. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
