Description

Formamide is a simple organic amide, corresponding to the amide of formic acid. Chemically it belongs to the family of amides, a group of compounds characterized by the presence of a carbonyl functional group bonded to a nitrogen atom.

Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, Formamide is listed in Annex II, reference 744. Annex II corresponds to the list of substances whose use is prohibited in the composition of cosmetic products marketed in the European Union. The listing in this annex means that the substance cannot form part of the formulation of a cosmetic product intended for the European market, regardless of the concentration or the type of product. Formamide is also classified as toxic for reproduction category 1B (Reprotoxic Cat. 1B) under the harmonized classification of hazardous substances. Substances classified as CMR category 1A or 1B are subject to the specific provisions of Article 15 of the Cosmetics Regulation. No maximum concentrations, particular conditions of use, restrictions by product type or additional labelling warnings are established in association with this entry, given the general nature of the prohibition.

As it is listed in Annex II of the European cosmetics regulation, this substance is not among the raw materials admitted for the manufacture of cosmetic products intended for the European Union market. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
