Description

Cinnamal is an unsaturated aldehyde, chemically described as 2-Propenal, 3-phenyl-. Aldehydes are organic compounds containing a carbonyl group bonded to a hydrogen atom. It has three declared technical functions, denaturant, perfuming and flavouring: in general terms, the perfuming function groups ingredients that contribute to or modulate the odor of a formulation; denaturants are added to make the product unpleasant to taste, mainly when it contains ethyl alcohol, and the flavouring function corresponds to ingredients that give flavor to the cosmetic product.

This substance is included, under reference 76, in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which brings together substances restricted subject to conditions. The applicable condition, quoted without modification, is: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 6(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". The declaration threshold is lower for leave-on products (0.001%) than for rinse-off products (0.01%), and exceeding it requires the substance to be indicated in the list of ingredients. Its cosmetic restriction reference is III/76.

As an ingredient with a perfuming function, it can be integrated into a fragrance composition or used to mask the odor of other components of the formula, so that it defines or corrects the aroma of the finished product. Denaturants are common in hydroalcoholic products, while the flavouring function is meaningful in products where flavor matters. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
