Description
Cinnamyl alcohol is an alcohol; this is indicated by its chemical name in CosIng, which coincides with the ingredient's own name. The common feature of alcohols is the presence of at least one hydroxyl group, and in cosmetics, depending on the compound, they perform functions ranging from solvent to aromatic component. Its declared technical functions are perfuming and flavouring: in general terms, the perfuming function groups ingredients that impart or adjust the odor of the formula, and the flavouring function, ingredients that give flavor to the cosmetic product.
Cinnamyl alcohol appears in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which brings together substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 69. The literal text of the applicable conditions states: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". The text distinguishes a threshold of 0.001% for leave-on products and of 0.01% for rinse-off products, both linked to the obligation to indicate the presence of the substance in the list of ingredients. In the inventory, the corresponding cosmetic restriction is recorded as III/69.
Within a cosmetic formula, a perfuming ingredient can form part of a fragrance composition or serve to cover the odor of other raw materials, and in this way contributes to the aromatic profile of the finished product. Flavouring ingredients are used in products where flavor is relevant. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
