Description
Coumarin is a heterocyclic compound of the benzopyran family, chemically described as 2H-1-Benzopyran-2-one. A heterocyclic compound contains in its structure a ring formed by carbon atoms and at least one atom of another element. It has the declared technical function perfuming: in general, this category covers ingredients used to give aroma to a formulation or to modify the aroma it already has, contributing a note of their own or joining a broader fragrance composition.
Within Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the substance is listed in Annex III, which brings together substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 77. The entry contains the following condition, in its literal version: "The presence of the substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19(1)g when its concentration exceeds: - 0.001% in leave-on products - 0.01% in rinse-off products". The two thresholds in the text, 0.001% for leave-on and 0.01% for rinse-off, mark the concentration above which the substance must appear in the list of ingredients. In the inventory, the corresponding cosmetic restriction is recorded as III/77.
In formulation practice, the perfuming function translates into building the aroma of the finished product, whether within a fragrance composition or as a means of masking the odor of other raw materials. The conditions of the entry refer both to products that remain on the skin or hair (leave-on) and to products that are rinsed off (rinse-off). The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
