Description
DMDM HYDANTOIN is an organic compound belonging to the hydantoin group, a chemical denomination that appears literally in its INCI name. In cosmetics it is used with the technical function of PRESERVATIVE (preservative). Preservatives are ingredients incorporated into cosmetic formulations in order to inhibit microbial growth—bacteria, yeasts and molds—within the product during its shelf life and once it has been opened by the consumer. The European INCI denomination used to identify this raw material is DMDM HYDANTOIN.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance is listed in Annex V, the list of preservative substances authorized in cosmetic products placed on the market in the European Union. The entry is identified with reference 33 within that Annex. The maximum authorized concentration in the finished cosmetic product is "0.6%". The associated cosmetic restriction is expressed in the usual notation as V/33, a reference that points to the corresponding position within Annex V. The INCI name used by the European Commission in the CosIng database to identify this raw material is DMDM HYDANTOIN, and the technical function recorded in that database is that of preservative (PRESERVATIVE) according to the nomenclature of technical functions used by the Commission itself.
