Description
METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE is a heterocyclic organic compound belonging to the isothiazolinone family, as its own chemical denomination reflects. Its technical function is that of preservative (PRESERVATIVE). Ingredients with this function are incorporated into cosmetic products for the general purpose of inhibiting the development of microorganisms during the shelf life of the product, helping to maintain the microbiological characteristics of the formulation from its manufacture until the end of its use by the consumer.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, the substance is listed in Annex V—the list of preservatives authorized in cosmetic products—under reference 57. The regulatory entry sets a maximum concentration of "0,0015 % Rinse-off products". The substance (CAS 2682-20-4) is also a component of the mixture in the Annex V entry, reference 39 (METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE AND METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE).
