Description

Benzylidene Camphor Sulfonic Acid is an organic compound whose chemical name is alpha-(2-Oxoborn-3-ylidene)toluene-4-sulphonic acid and its salts. Its declared technical function is that of ultraviolet filter, ultraviolet absorber and light stabilizer. Ultraviolet filters are substances incorporated into cosmetic products in order to absorb, reflect or scatter radiation in the UV spectrum; light stabilizers, for their part, are used to reduce the photochemical degradation of other components of the formulation.

Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance appears in Annex VI, reference 9, which lists the authorized ultraviolet filters. The maximum authorized concentration in the finished cosmetic product is "6% (as acid)". No specific restrictions by product type or additional conditions of use are established beyond that limit. Nor are any additional mandatory labelling warnings prescribed in association with this Annex VI entry. The substance is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMR) under the applicable harmonized criteria. As an ultraviolet filter listed in Annex VI, its use in cosmetic products marketed in the European Union is conditional on strict compliance with the quantitative limit indicated.

The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
