Description
Camphor benzalkonium methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium compound. The technical functions assigned to this ingredient within cosmetic nomenclature are antimicrobial, antistatic, UV absorber and UV filter. UV filters are substances that absorb ultraviolet radiation and are incorporated into cosmetic formulations to modulate the interaction of the product with that radiation; antimicrobial agents limit microbial growth in the cosmetic matrix; antistatic agents reduce the surface electrical charge on the skin or hair; and UV absorbers help preserve the photochemical stability of other components present in the formulation.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, this substance is listed in Annex VI of that Regulation with reference 2, expressed by the abbreviated notation "VI/2". Annex VI contains the positive list of ultraviolet filters authorized for use in cosmetic products placed on the market within the European Union; for each entry, it specifies, among other elements, the maximum permitted concentration and, where applicable, the conditions associated with use. The maximum authorized concentration of this substance in the ready-for-use cosmetic product is "6%". Within the European cosmetic ingredient nomenclature system, the substance is recorded with the technical functions of UV filter, UV absorber, antimicrobial and antistatic.
When the same compound also combines antimicrobial or antistatic functions, these properties may be considered complementary within the overall design of the formulation. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
