Description
ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE is an organic ester resulting from the esterification of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol with salicylic acid, and falls within the chemical family of salicylates. Under the international nonproprietary name (INN) it is identified as octisalate. In cosmetics it is used with the technical functions of ultraviolet filter, ultraviolet absorber and light stabilizer. Ingredients classified as ultraviolet filters constitute a category of compounds that interact with ultraviolet radiation and that European legislation specifically recognizes for that purpose within the formulation of finished cosmetic products.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE is listed in Annex VI, which corresponds to the list of admitted ultraviolet filters, under reference 20. The entry sets a maximum authorized concentration in the ready-for-use cosmetic product of "5%". The applicable regulatory coding is VI/20, a notation that identifies the position of the substance within the system of annexes of the Regulation and that groups the molecule together with the rest of the positively listed ultraviolet filters with their respective quantitative conditions of use.
Ultraviolet filters, as a functional category within cosmetics, are generally incorporated into products intended for interaction with solar radiation and into formulations in which the aim is to preserve the light stability of other components of the formula. Their inclusion in Annex VI implies that their use is subject to a positive list established by the Regulation. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
