Description
Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, known by its international nonproprietary name bisoctrizole, is an organic compound belonging, according to its chemical name, to the family of phenolic derivatives with benzotriazolyl groups. In cosmetics it is registered with the technical functions of light stabilizer and ultraviolet filter (UV filter). Ultraviolet filters are substances incorporated into cosmetic products for the purpose of filtering certain ultraviolet radiation to protect the skin from certain effects associated with that radiation. Light stabilizers, as a category, group ingredients used to attenuate the photoinduced degradation of the components of the formulation, helping to preserve the characteristics of the finished product over time.
The ingredient appears in Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on cosmetic products, under reference number 23. This annex constitutes the positive list of authorized ultraviolet filters: in cosmetic products marketed in the European Union, only the ultraviolet filters listed in that annex may be used, at the concentrations and under the conditions laid down therein. The maximum authorized concentration in the ready-for-use cosmetic product is "10%". The regulatory entry identifies the ingredient by its international nonproprietary name bisoctrizole. The applicable cosmetic restriction is recorded under the code "VI/23", corresponding to the location of the substance within the annex of permitted ultraviolet filters.
