Description
PEG-25 PABA is a polyethylene glycol derivative of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), obtained by ethoxylation of the aromatic amine with approximately 25 ethylene oxide units. Chemically it belongs to the family of PABA derivatives. Its declared technical function is that of light stabilizer, UV absorber and UV filter. UV filters are substances intended to filter certain ultraviolet radiation in order to protect the skin or the cosmetic product against certain effects of that radiation.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, PEG-25 PABA is listed in Annex VI, reference 13, which corresponds to the list of ultraviolet filters admitted in cosmetic products. The maximum authorized concentration in the ready-for-use product is "10%". The ingredient is not classified as a CMR substance (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction) according to the applicable regulatory data. No mandatory labelling warnings are laid down, nor any supplementary specific conditions linked to the type of cosmetic product. Nor are any other cosmetic restrictions recorded beyond those specified in reference VI/13. The listing in Annex VI implies that use as an ultraviolet filter in cosmetic products placed on the market in the European Union is confined to the literal terms of that entry.
