Description
Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid is a sulfonated organic compound derived from camphor. Its structure combines two camphor units joined by an aromatic terephthalylidene bridge, with sulfonic acid groups. It is classified within the technical functions of light stabilizer, UV absorber and UV filter. Ingredients of this class are incorporated into cosmetic formulations intended to modulate the interaction of the product or the skin with ultraviolet radiation, absorbing photons in defined ranges of the UV spectrum. The associated INN identifier is ecamsule.
Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, this ingredient is listed in Annex VI (list of UV filters permitted in cosmetic products), under reference 7. The maximum authorized concentration in the ready-to-use cosmetic product is "10%(as acid)". No specific restrictions by type of cosmetic product are established, nor additional conditions of use beyond the concentration limit. Nor are any additional mandatory labelling warnings prescribed within this entry. The ingredient is not classified as a CMR substance (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction) under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. No other complementary cosmetic restrictions associated with this reference within Annex VI are recorded.
UV filters are a category of ingredients used in cosmetic formulations whose technical objective is to interact with incident ultraviolet radiation, either by absorbing or scattering it. Light stabilizers and UV absorbers also contribute to preserving the integrity of other light-sensitive components within the cosmetic matrix. The information presented is for technical reference only and does not constitute a recommendation for use or an efficacy claim.
